Ambleside Bridge House Postcard A6

The Most Quirky Building in the Lake District

Perched improbably on a tiny stone bridge spanning Stock Ghyll in the heart of Ambleside, Bridge House is one of the most photographed and instantly recognisable buildings in the entire Lake District. This extraordinary little structure — barely wider than the bridge it sits on — dates back to the 17th century and is thought to have been built as an apple store by the owners of nearby Ambleside Hall, possibly to avoid land tax. It has since served as a weaver's shop, a family home (reputedly housing a couple and six children), and a tea room, and is now owned by the National Trust and used as an information centre.

This beautifully produced postcard captures the enduring charm of Ambleside Bridge House — a building that never fails to raise a smile and a question: how on earth did anyone live there?
